In rare cases where pets do not respond to other weight management methods and obesity poses a health threat, veterinarians may recommend liposuction for cats and dogs. Ekaterina Vorobyova, head of the Veterinary Center of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “VGNKI,” provided insights on this topic.
“Surgical treatment for obesity in animals, including liposuction, is indeed practiced both in Russia and abroad, but this procedure remains relatively uncommon. Typically, such surgeries are considered when other methods, such as diet and increased physical activity, have failed and excess weight endangers the animal’s health,” she explained.
The cost of the procedure varies depending on the region and the veterinary clinic where it is performed. “On average, such an operation costs between 30,000 to 100,000 rubles,” Vorobyova added.
She emphasized that surgery is only recommended in cases of serious health issues, such as diabetes or joint diseases.
Recovery for pets after liposuction can take from several days to a few weeks, depending on the patient’s condition and the complexity of the procedure performed by the veterinarian.
“During this period, it is essential to monitor the condition of the incision, limit physical activity, and follow the veterinarian’s recommendations,” Vorobyova concluded.
