Hairdresser Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison for Performing Liposuction on Woman Who Died

Posted on October 29, 2025

A Bogotá Circuit Court judge has sentenced Brenda Gissele Celeita Angarita to 51 months in prison, equivalent to more than four years, for performing an unauthorized cosmetic surgery that resulted in the death of a woman.

The court found Angarita, a hairdresser without medical training or accredited experience, guilty of involuntary manslaughter. In addition to the prison sentence, she has been ordered to pay a fine of 57,045 times the current legal minimum monthly wage, amounting to approximately 81 million pesos.

The incident occurred on September 15, 2023, at a beauty salon in the Antonio Nariño locality of southern Bogotá, which lacked the necessary permits to provide health services. According to the investigation led by a prosecutor from the Territorial Support Directorate, Angarita began performing a liposuction procedure without the required qualifications. During the irregular intervention, the patient suffered a seizure and was urgently transported to a medical facility, where she ultimately died from respiratory failure.

This ruling is a first-instance decision, and appeals may be filed.
